Island escape - Bonaire

Sep 14, 2012

Last week DF and I took 1 day off work (we are helping his parents with the family business while we are here) to visit Bonaire, a nearby island that is just a short 10-minute flight away.

I thought a 1 day trip is too short but that is all the time we could afford to take off right now and Curacao (the island where I am now) has an odd rule that visitors must not stay longer than 30 days at a time so I had no choice but to leave the island and then come back. It really is a hassle and rather costly each time as the airfares to nearby islands aren't cheap even though they are so close by.

Bonaire is the smallest island in the Netherlands Antilles. It is quite dry, very very hot and unlike Aruba or Curacao which are famous for the nice beaches, Bonaire is known as a "diver's paradise".  I only saw one decent public beach when I was there, a very small number of people swimming but lots of divers and wind surfers. I've had way too much sun exposure this summer and didn't feel like going into the water so we just spent the day driving around the island and admire the wonderfully blue water along the coast lines. We spent one night in Bonaire at DF's family friend's place before flying out the next day. It was a short trip but I had a great time and felt so much more relaxed after. This was also my last visit to a Dutch Caribbean island during this trip because in 3 weeks I am heading to Europe. We are so excited and counting down the days!!!
